All New 2013 Nissan Pathfinder

If there is anything the All New 2013 Pathfinder demands, it is to be looked at as an All New vehicle!

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is a completely different vehicle from its predecessors, representing a shift in design and functionality. Unlike the outgoing model, which was a mid-size SUV with real off-road capabilities, the new Pathfinder blends the characteristics of an SUV and a crossover. It maintains the capacity for off-road driving but does not cater to extreme off-roading like its predecessors.

Throughout its history, every version of the Pathfinder has significantly differed from the last. The original 1986 Pathfinder was a rugged, body-on-frame SUV, while the subsequent generations have explored various structural designs. The latest fourth generation 2013 Pathfinder returns to a unibody construction, aligning with market trends and positioning it closer to a crossover family SUV.

Driving Performance

The 3.5-liter VQ 35 engine returns, providing 254 HP and 325 Nm of torque. While this may not seem like much power, particularly for the top-end, fully loaded 4WD Pathfinder that weighs around 2 tonnes, it is paired with a new chain-driven CVT. The driving experience can feel a bit sluggish unless the accelerator is fully engaged, likely as a result of Nissan's focus on improving fuel economy.

Notably, the new Pathfinder is 13% faster and a remarkable 30% (270 kgs) lighter than the outgoing model. The 0-100 km/h acceleration occurs in about 7.5 seconds in 2WD mode. When pushed, the tachometer reaches 6000 RPM at around 120 km/h, and we managed to push it up to 170 km/h with stability.

The steering provides a sturdy feel but is not particularly communicative. Drivers must stay attentive to maintain lane position on the highway, which can be seen as a positive feature!

Interior

Interior of All New 2013 Nissan Pathfinder

The interior of the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is bright and welcoming. The all-black theme, complemented by beige leather, creates a spacious atmosphere, especially with the optional dual-panorama moonroof. The Pathfinder comfortably seats seven, offering a substantial 173.8 cubic feet of interior space. The third row is significantly better than typical options, accommodating short adults or children easily.

Families can enjoy road trips with ease, thanks to the accessible third row, even when a child seat is present in the second row. The tri-zone A/C and tri-zone DVD entertainment system enhance comfort for all passengers. The front seats, available with heating and cooling features in the top trim, add to the overall comfort.

Overall, the cabin feels more open compared to other SUVs, and the sleek exterior is enhanced by the slim A and D pillars. Instrumentation is straightforward, with the center console dominated by an 8-inch display screen that includes touch-screen controls along with traditional buttons and rotary knobs, differing from some competitors that utilize fully digital setups.

Initial Verdict

The new Nissan Pathfinder offers a balanced mix of features but does not seem to excel in any particular area. The driving experience may feel unusual due to the lack of engine sound or speed changes when accelerating, a result of the new CVT system. This paradigm shift may take some getting used to.

Nissan appears to have tailored the Pathfinder to meet the needs of families who occasionally venture off the beaten path. With prices ranging from 29,750 USD to 46,000 USD, a 5-star crash rating, and 10 airbags along with a variety of standard features, the 2013 Pathfinder is certainly worth considering.
