2014 Cadillac CTS 3.6 Experience

2014 Cadillac CTS

This week, we had the opportunity to test the 2014 Cadillac CTS 3.6, which has undergone significant updates. After experiencing two other V6 sedans, the Hyundai Genesis and the Infiniti Q50, we were eager to try another V6 model—the new CTS. Here’s our experience:

Elegance

Cadillac CTS Design

Cadillac has a distinctive design identity, which we've seen showcased in many music videos. The CTS continues this legacy. The 2014 model bears a strong resemblance to its larger sibling, the Cadillac XTS V-Sport, which we previously tested. It stands out as one of the most luxurious and stylish V6 cars we've encountered, exuding a fierce character. We loved its bold front grille, which is more pronounced than ever. While the Infiniti Q50 is wide, the CTS is longer by 127mm, enhancing its elegance. The stunning 18-inch alloy wheels are a perfect complement, and yes, the iconic headlights are LED.

Interior Quality and Materials

Interior Quality

As expected from Cadillac, the interior quality is exceptional. The seats, which can be adjusted in 20 different ways, are upholstered in leather with exquisite hand stitching. This is truly a business-class vehicle, and you feel the luxury as soon as you sit inside. The interior lighting is beautifully designed, adding to its sophistication. The only downside is the front console and doors, which do not match the overall quality of the car. I've seen better wood finishes in vehicles like the Chrysler 300 C and even the new Hyundai Genesis. Additionally, I wasn't impressed with the design of the front console; it's quite small. I struggled to fit a small notebook inside, which took some time. I recommend enlarging these areas in the next generation.

Technology and Interior Features

Cadillac CTS Technology

The Cadillac CTS boasts a range of comfort and entertainment features. It comes equipped with a Bose sound system, and you can upgrade to add an impressive 13 speakers for an exceptional audio experience. Our model included a remote start feature that allows you to cool the car for a few minutes before getting in, which is fantastic for the hot Gulf climate. I was particularly impressed with the customizable information display. Importantly, this vehicle is very safe for families, coming with 10 airbags, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot alert, and a collision warning system. There’s also a rear parking assist feature, and you can add a child seat as well. One drawback was that the volume controls were located to the left of the steering wheel, which may not be comfortable for all drivers. Lastly, the haptic touchscreen entertainment system is remarkable, but it takes some time to get used to since it's different from standard systems.

Interior Space and Visibility

Interior Space

The interior space is good, but it isn't the standout feature of the 2014 CTS. Although it is designed to accommodate five people, realistically, it can comfortably fit two adults in the back and a child in the middle. Rear legroom is adequate, and the trunk, while not overly spacious, can hold some cargo. Visibility is decent, but you need to be cautious when changing lanes. The front visibility is excellent, making parking easy.

Power and Acceleration

Power and Acceleration

The engine of the 2014 Cadillac CTS produces 321 horsepower and 373 Nm of torque, comparable to the BMW 535i. It offers two driving modes: Touring and Sport (there's also a snow mode, but it's not needed here). The transmission has been updated to an 8-speed automatic, which helps with fuel efficiency. The Touring mode is good for fuel economy and highway driving, keeping the RPM below 2,000 even at speeds exceeding 120 km/h. However, acceleration isn't the strongest in this mode. In Sport mode, our testing showed the car accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 8.25 seconds. While this is decent for the engine, it does feel somewhat sluggish compared to the acceleration of the Hyundai Genesis Sedan and Infiniti Q50. To be fair, this vehicle is not designed for sporty performance but rather for a balanced driving experience. That said, it effectively combines power, acceleration, and driving enjoyment. The engine sounds beautiful when accelerating, and road noise is minimal.

Handling and Suspension

Handling

This was a pleasant surprise. The 2014 CTS handles significantly better than many American sedans. It has an almost 50:50 weight distribution, with corner weight reduced by 90 kg, and magnetic ride control is standard across all models. This greatly enhances driving and cornering. But does it match the quality of German cars? Not quite yet. While it's good, you can occasionally feel some body roll. I reiterate that considering the vehicle's intended purpose, its handling exceeds expectations. The suspension in Sport mode is not bad, thanks to the magnetic ride control, which, combined with the improved stiffness, makes the CTS better at cornering than, for example, the Chrysler 300 C.

Conclusion

The 2014 Cadillac CTS is perfect for those who appreciate luxurious American vehicles. The driving experience strikes a balance between enjoyment and power. It may not be the most spacious or sporty option, but it is undoubtedly very elegant.
