Driving Experience

On the second day after the launch of the 2014 GMC Sierra at Ski Dubai, we had the opportunity to test drive the vehicle. There were nine Sierra trucks to choose from, and I picked the most striking one—a vibrant red model. I had seen it previously and was eager to experience it first-hand. Although it was a prototype, I was curious to see what it had to offer without any additional features.

Seat Comfort and Technology
Despite the fabric seats, I was keen to try out the new double-density foam seats designed for long-lasting comfort. These seats are built to endure over time without leaving imprints. Even if a drink spills on them, it won't leave a mark.
Safety Features and Technology
Once seated, I was pleased to discover that our prototype included:
- Parking sensors
- Collision alert
- Lane departure warning
- Cruise control
- Hill descent control
The engine in our model was a smaller 4.3L V6 EcoTec3 generating 285 horsepower and 413 Nm of torque. The EcoTec3 signifies that the engine features direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, and active fuel management, which switches between four cylinders to enhance fuel economy. In four-wheel drive mode, it has a towing capacity of 3,266 kg. But can it tow the 170-ton aircraft that the Nissan Patrol pulled? Hmm...

The Journey to Al Dhaid
We embarked on our 102 km journey to our first stop, Al Dhaid. The Sierra's imposing size gave it a presence on the road, especially evident when parked next to a Mitsubishi Pajero. The Sierra effectively minimized cabin noise thanks to redesigned side mirrors, dense door padding, and a well-crafted front grille. The result was impressive.
Press down on the accelerator, and you can barely hear the engine. It accelerates smoothly and powerfully. Reaching high speeds is effortless, and the 2014 Sierra is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes with Duralife rotors, providing a robust surface that reduces wear and maintains quieter braking with less vibration.
Climbing Hills and Using Hill Descent Control
Upon reaching Al Dhaid, a steep hill awaited us for climbing. We switched the Sierra to 4H and accelerated, amazed at how effortlessly we ascended while navigating rocky terrain. Upon reaching the top, we were greeted with stunning views of the mountains and dunes. It was time to engage the hill descent control as we navigated curves and steep slopes that could easily lead to rollovers. Once at the bottom, we switched drivers to experience the ride as a passenger.

Backseat Experience
After swapping vehicles, I took a seat in the back and was pleasantly surprised. Getting into the back was easy, and there was plenty of legroom. This Sierra was equipped with a 5.3L EcoTec3 engine producing 355 horsepower and 519 Nm of torque. The entertainment screen was larger, featuring navigation and three USB ports. Although it was comfortable and spacious in the back, we were shocked to find no ventilation outlets. With temperatures soaring to 45 degrees in the middle of the desert and no air conditioning vents, you can imagine the discomfort.
Driving on Sand Dunes
We arrived at a sand dune area, and it was time to test the Sierra on the dunes. We deflated the tires and switched to 4L, turning off traction control and stability control, ready to drive. We encountered challenging areas and reached speeds of 70 km/h between the dunes, but the Sierra proved resilient, effortlessly overcoming all obstacles.

Conclusion
As we wrapped up our drive, we activated the lane departure warning and headed to the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. For the first time, we experienced the driver seat alert from GMC, which vibrates to warn the driver of potential hazards like lane changes or rapid approaches to other vehicles. However, I’m not a fan of this feature, so I turned it off.
Upon arrival at the club, we enjoyed lunch with a wonderful group. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience. While the 2014 GMC Sierra will only be available for sale during the first week of November, you have time to save up for this vehicle: AED 107,983 for the Regular Cab model, AED 115,428 for the Double Cab variant, AED 120,915 for the Crew Cab, and AED 198,392 for the Denali model.
