Driving Experience of the 2016 Ford Explorer: Specifications and Design
The Ford Explorer has been a well-known name in the SUV market for over 25 years. The 2016 model is marketed as a completely new sixth generation, but we see it as more of an update. Let’s delve into the details of our experience with the 2016 Explorer.
What to Look For:
Exterior Design
The new Explorer continues to be built on the Taurus and Flex platform launched in 2011 with the fifth generation. This was the first time the Explorer transitioned to a crossover. If you look closely, you’ll notice that the wheelbase has increased by 0.2 inches due to suspension adjustments. However, the most noticeable changes are the new front and rear designs. I particularly liked the aggressive front end, especially with the black grille.
Interior
The interior is what we expect from Ford vehicles. However, since I tested the Sport model, it was heavily accented in black. But this isn’t the main reason to buy an Explorer; the compelling reasons are its features and comfort. The vehicle was comfortable despite the Sport model having a stiff suspension. The driving quality is good, and the sound insulation is effective even at high speeds. It also offers the Microsoft Sync entertainment system, which I find decent but not particularly user-friendly. Overall, the interior is attractive, though I expected slightly better quality.
Driving Performance
This is where the Explorer truly excels compared to its competitors. The Sport model features a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine producing 365 horsepower and 475 Nm of torque paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, with all-wheel drive, the Explorer can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6 seconds. Overall, the driving experience was enjoyable, but I recommend utilizing the 8-speed transmission in future models.
Summary
If you’re tired of the Pilot and Pathfinder, consider checking out the Explorer.
