Review of the 2016 Mitsubishi L200 Pickup
Introduction
As the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." The Mitsubishi L200 is one of those models that seems impervious to the passage of time, which is why consumers continue to buy it. Recognizing this, Mitsubishi chose to enhance rather than overhaul this iconic pickup. But did they succeed?
Model History
The previous version of this pickup enjoyed nearly a decade of success, with Mitsubishi selling approximately 1.3 million units during that time. It's clear the pickup was good—was it perfect?
Engine Improvements
Far from it! The old engine lacked sufficient power and consumed fuel like a child with a candy jar. The ride was pleasant for the first few months, but soon turned as rough as being in a truck, and the cabin was hardly a joke.
Mitsubishi took all this feedback to heart and equipped the new generation with a 2.4-liter turbo diesel engine, available in two variants:
- A lower-powered version generating 151 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque.
- A more powerful version producing 178 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque.
Engine Efficiency
The new engine is approximately 15% more fuel-efficient and more powerful than its predecessor. The 2016 Mitsubishi L200 offers two transmission options:
- A 6-speed manual transmission.
- A 5-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
Improvements in Suspension and Cabin Design
According to Mitsubishi, the suspension system has been redesigned with a focus on passenger comfort. Mitsubishi has effectively rebuilt the cabin—truly, we should say they worked on the cabin, as what existed before was hardly worthy of the name! Additionally, noise reduction inside the cabin was prioritized.
We would like to remind you that Mitsubishi promised to deliver new designs for all models starting from 2016!
Conclusion
Ultimately, Mitsubishi has made significant improvements in three key areas that needed attention while preserving the features that made the pickup popular in the first place. Thus, we believe that what Mitsubishi has crafted here is truly the best multipurpose pickup truck to date.
