2017 Mazda CX-3 Review

Mazda CX-3

During my visit to the Dubai International Motor Show in 2015, the Mazda CX-3 was presented as a concept vehicle. At that time, Mazda conducted a survey among attendees to gauge interest in bringing this model to the UAE market. The positive feedback led to the launch of the 2017 Mazda CX-3. In the UAE, the CX-3 is available in three trims:

  • GS 2WD
  • GT AWD
  • GT X AWD

Exterior Design

The Mazda CX-3 shares a platform with the Mazda 2 and embodies Mazda's "Kodo Design" philosophy, which translates to "Soul of Motion." This design language is evident across all Mazda models, allowing them to stand out with a cohesive aesthetic. For instance, the front grille lines extend into the headlights, inspired by the eyes of the swift cheetah.

The CX-3 features a sporty design that surpasses its competitors in the compact SUV segment, characterized by a long hood, rear wheels positioned close to the back, and sleek lines that connect to the taillights. The sporty essence is further emphasized by the dual exhaust outlets at the rear.

This version we are testing today features a chrome front grille and LED headlights with daytime running lights, along with 18-inch wheels, while other trims come with 16-inch wheels.

Interior Design

Mazda stands out from its competitors by investing effort into the interior design of its vehicles. The sporty theme continues inside, featuring circular air vents, a large tachometer in front of the driver, and a digital speedometer.

I particularly appreciated the red accents throughout the cabin, including on the air vents, leather seats, and door panels, along with red stitching on the steering wheel, gear shifter, and dashboard. Additionally, high-quality materials are used in touchpoints throughout the vehicle.

However, it is worth mentioning that the rear seating space is somewhat cramped, and the storage capacity is less than that of its competitors in the same class.

Technology and Safety

In terms of specifications, I was surprised by the extensive features available in this model. Here are some of them:

  • Keyless entry system with a push-button start and a walk away feature that automatically locks the car when you move away.
  • 7-inch touchscreen for the entertainment system, which can also be easily controlled while driving from the center console.
  • Bose sound system with 7 speakers.
  • Automatic climate control system.
  • Bluetooth and audio control buttons on the steering wheel.
  • Adaptive cruise control buttons that maintain a safe distance from the car ahead automatically.
  • Heads-up display for important driver information such as speed, set speed, selected safety distance, lane departure warnings, and essential navigation information.
  • Blind spot monitoring lights on the side mirrors.
  • USB, AUX ports, and an SD card slot.
  • Front airbags and front and side curtain airbags.

Driving Experience

Driving Mazda CX-3

The Mazda CX-3 is equipped with a 2.0-liter engine that delivers 148 horsepower and a torque of 192 Nm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission featuring a Tiptronic mode for manual gear shifting via paddle shifters. This setup allows the Mazda to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 8.7 seconds.

One of the highlights of the Mazda CX-3 is its enjoyable and sporty driving experience, making it particularly appealing to younger drivers. However, the setup that provides such a thrilling drive can impact ride comfort, especially over bumps and uneven roads.

Conclusion

Mazda CX-3 Conclusion

With prices starting from 59,900 to 79,900 AED, the Mazda CX-3 is indeed an attractive option, featuring a sporty design and a wealth of specifications, especially for young drivers who value an enjoyable driving experience and can overlook the rear passenger space constraints.
