Introduction
One of the greatest perks of being an automotive journalist is the opportunity to test drive the latest cars in some of the most stunning locations. Salalah, the capital of the Dhofar Governorate in Oman, is a favored destination known for its natural beauty.
Arrival in Salalah
I couldn’t miss the chance to experience the latest offering from Chevrolet, the 2018 Equinox, in one of Oman’s most picturesque areas. So, I booked my ticket and headed to Dubai Airport on a Tuesday afternoon, eventually arriving at Salalah International Airport.
Accommodation
Amidst the delightful summer weather, coconut and banana trees dotting the Arabian desert, I completed my entry visa procedures and headed to the marvelous Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara, where I would enjoy the next 24 hours in complete comfort.
About the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox
Although the Equinox is a relatively new vehicle in the Middle East market, it has a long-standing history in Chevrolet’s lineup, currently in its third generation. The Equinox is positioned between the smaller Trax and the larger Traverse. It competes against models like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
Driving Experience
After attending a press conference that provided detailed information about the vehicle, it was time to sit behind the wheel and take it for a spin on the roads, exploring the stunning regions of Salalah. One of the notable areas we visited was Jebel Samhan and Wadi Darbat, known for its unique topography that defies gravity.
Car Design
The 2018 model features a more appealing design and is lighter by approximately 180 kg compared to its predecessor. The exterior showcases a prominent front grille paired with sculpted headlights, complemented by a distinct curve running along the vehicle, connecting to the protruding front bumper.
Interior Comfort and Features
The cabin is free from clutter, featuring a wealth of soft-touch materials and a two-tone design with chrome accents adorning the dashboard. It comfortably accommodates five passengers with ample headroom and legroom, along with a storage capacity of up to 847 liters.
Car Performance
During my drive, I engaged the gear selector in manual mode paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, providing me with complete control over the shifts. With a power output of 252 horsepower and 352 Nm of torque, the American crossover navigated effortlessly without any noticeable effort.
Conclusion
As my journey concluded and I awaited my departure gate at the airport, I reflected on the Equinox and its Japanese competitors. With a starting price of AED 76,900 and features like active front air shutters and an active noise cancellation system, I believe showrooms will be bustling once it launches in the market this coming September.
