Driving Experience: 2018 Mazda CX-5

Introduction

Today, we delve into one of the best-selling vehicle categories: SUVs. Specifically, I’ll be reviewing the 2018 Mazda CX-5, Mazda’s mid-size SUV that first hit the market in 2012, replacing the discontinued Mazda CX-7. The CX-5 competes with vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail, and Honda CR-V. Let’s take a closer look at what the 2018 Mazda CX-5 has to offer in terms of exterior and interior design, technological specifications, and more.

Exterior Design

Mazda CX 5 2018 Side

In my opinion, Mazda is one of the most successful Japanese manufacturers when it comes to a unified design language across all its vehicles. All Mazda cars share a design philosophy known as KODO Design, or the "Soul of Motion." This has allowed Mazda vehicles to maintain a distinctive look without attempting to mimic European cars, preserving a clear Japanese spirit. Indeed, brands like Toyota, Nissan, and Honda could learn a thing or two from Mazda in this regard.

This design language is a standout feature of the Mazda CX-5, which boasts one of the most attractive SUV designs on the market today. The CX-5 showcases a blend of simplicity and elegance, merging boldness with maturity. The front features a large black grille with intersecting lines and the Mazda logo encased in glass, enhancing the vehicle's upscale feel. Additionally, the chrome line connecting to the headlights is more pronounced this year, extending below the headlights, unlike the previous model where it connected above.

With the GTX trim we have today, which is fully equipped, we enjoy:

  • Fully automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights, and fog lights
  • Adaptive lighting that adjusts when cornering

From the side, the GTX trim features 19-inch alloy wheels, while the GS and GT trims come with 17-inch wheels. The simple yet elegant design continues with clear lines along the sides and a contoured roof.

At the rear, Mazda's attention to detail is evident with:

  • Uniquely designed taillights
  • A small rear spoiler with a brake light
  • Dual exhaust outlets that enhance the sporty look of the CX-5

Interior Design

Inside the CX-5, you’ll notice Mazda's commitment to design and quality materials, setting it apart from other vehicles in its class. The GTX trim features a stylish interior with a two-tone black and white theme, employing high-quality materials throughout. Mazda cleverly places plastic materials in less visible areas, opting for premium finishes in the cabin. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, upholstered in leather with electric adjustments, though I wish there was a cooling feature available in this trim.

Rear seating is quite spacious for two passengers, thanks to the convex roof design that offers decent headroom. However, a third passenger in the middle may find legroom a bit cramped, which could be uncomfortable for the others sitting in the back due to the vehicle's narrower width. The rear cabin includes air conditioning vents and two hidden USB ports for mobile charging, located in the armrest.

Technology and Safety Features

Mazda CX 5 2018 Infotainment screen

The 2018 CX-5 GTX comes equipped with keyless entry and ignition but lacks remote start. It features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the dashboard. I was surprised that Mazda didn’t increase the screen size, as there is ample space for a larger display. The infotainment system includes navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 10-speaker Bose sound system. I appreciated Mazda's inclusion of a dial and buttons in the center console for easy control of the entertainment system while driving. Additionally, we have:

  • Electric parking brake with an automatic hold feature when the vehicle stops
  • Dual-zone climate control

The driver benefits from a round display on the instrument panel, presenting various information, alongside a heads-up display projecting crucial driving data like speed, blind spot alerts, cruise control information, and navigation directions.

In terms of safety and assistance systems, this version includes:

  • 6 airbags
  • Collision warning and automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning and correction system
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rear camera and sensors that alert to any movement behind the vehicle, automatically applying brakes if a potential collision is detected

Driving Dynamics

From my experiences driving any Mazda, I notice the brand's dedication to delivering a driving experience that enthusiasts will enjoy. The CX-5 is no exception—it offers a precise and responsive driving feel. However, I wish it had a more powerful engine than the 2.5-liter four-cylinder that generates 188 horsepower and 251 Nm of torque, which is adequate for smooth driving. A larger or turbocharged engine would have complemented the stability that the vehicle exhibits, allowing it to handle more powerful motors.

Enhancing the driving pleasure is the 6-speed Activematic transmission, which allows for manual shifting. I commend Mazda for correctly placing the "downshift" and "upshift" controls in manual mode, with downshift on the right and upshift on the left, akin to racing cars.

Conclusion

In conclusion, after experiencing the Mazda CX-5, I must admit it outshines its competitors in this segment with its stunning design, numerous features, and thrilling driving dynamics. However, it is worth noting that it is the most expensive option in its class, starting at 90,000 AED, with the GTX version reaching up to 135,000 AED. Nevertheless, it remains a standout vehicle in this category.
