Review of the 2018 MG GS: Specifications, Design, and Technology

History of the MG Brand

The MG brand may not mean much to most people, but for automotive enthusiasts, it represents a storied British marque that began producing cars in 1924. The name is an abbreviation for "Morris Garage." Over the years, the company has changed hands multiple times, being owned by well-known car manufacturers such as British Leyland, Rover, British Aerospace, and BMW. MG has produced some of the most famous sports cars, which are now considered classic collectibles, including the iconic MG B.

2018 MG GS Overview

Currently, MG is owned by the Chinese company SAIC Motors, which has expanded its lineup to include sedans, hatchbacks, and compact SUVs. One of these models is the MG GS.

The MG GS was developed with a unique production plan that involved British designers and engineers to create the vehicle's design, which was then manufactured entirely in a factory in Shanghai. This strategy has allowed MG to produce a vehicle with European flair and advanced technology at competitive prices.

Main Specifications

Engine: 2.0 L Turbocharged
Transmission: 6-Speed Automatic
Power: 220 HP / 350 Nm Torque
Top Speed: 208 km/h
Price: 84,000 AED (Top Trim)

Exterior Design

MG GS 2018

The MG GS's design features sharp lines and angles, particularly at the front and sides, which may take some time to get used to. The model we have today is equipped with xenon headlights and fog lamps that enhance its aesthetic appeal, although the high rear design lacks aerodynamic flow and any distinctive design elements.

Interior Design

The interior of the MG GS emphasizes simplicity, featuring a central touchscreen and buttons for controlling the automatic climate system. However, a significant downside is the excessive use of hard plastic throughout the cabin, even in this top-spec version. The rear passenger space is spacious for a vehicle of this size, and the rear seats can fold down to provide additional cargo space.

Technology and Safety

The MG GS comes equipped with all the expected luxury features for this category of vehicles, including keyless entry, push-to-start ignition, and a touchscreen display with "mirroring" for your smartphone, Bluetooth connectivity, and a six-speaker sound system. It also includes cruise control and hill descent assist. The all-wheel-drive version features a Diff Lock system for improved performance on unpaved roads. Additional features include an automatic braking system and a climate control system operated via the touchscreen.

However, despite these amenities, the MG GS would benefit from a blind-spot monitoring system, particularly as visibility from the rearview mirror and side windows is limited due to the wide C-pillar and small windows.

Driving Experience

Mechanically, this vehicle boasts impressive numbers, featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that generates 220 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. These figures are comparable to those of the Golf GTI. The engine is paired with a 6-speed transmission, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.2 seconds, with a top speed of 208 km/h, which is outstanding for a vehicle of this class.

However, beyond these impressive statistics, the noticeable turbo lag can be quite evident. Nonetheless, the driving feel is good, with the steering providing plenty of feedback, although it lacks precision.

Conclusion

At a price of 84,000 AED for the fully equipped version, the MG GS offers significant competition against vehicles like the Ford EcoSport, Nissan Kicks, and even against models like the Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V.

SAIC Motors faces a challenging task ahead in proving the reliability of its vehicles and building customer trust in the brand, similar to the success experienced by Korean automakers, in order to firmly establish itself in the market and attract new customers who appreciate the heritage of MG.
