Review of the 2018 Volvo XC40

Introduction

Volvo has responded to the demand for compact SUVs by launching its latest model, the XC40. This vehicle enters a competitive market, going head-to-head with strong contenders like the Audi Q3, Jaguar E-Pace, and Range Rover Evoque. Targeting a younger audience, the XC40 distinguishes itself by not sharing the architecture of larger models like XC60 and XC90, resulting in a completely independent design and engineering.

Driving Experience

As a member of the Middle East Car of the Year (MECOTY) judging panel, I had the opportunity to test the new Swedish vehicle in Milan during its official launch. Despite the rainy weather, which contrasts with the sunny conditions in the Middle East, I was impressed with the range of engines available for the XC40, its smooth driving experience, and its extensive technological features suitable for various driving environments.

Exterior Design

Unlike its competitors that often apply a signature design across different vehicle types, Volvo has challenged automotive design conventions, giving the XC40 a unique look. The result includes:

  • Distinctive window shapes with clear angles.
  • Two-tone exterior color options.
  • Unique touches, such as a rubber Swedish flag on the hood.

Interior Design

The interior design is simple yet highly functional. The cabin features elegant elements, including glossy black accents on the center console and striking red carpeting on the floor and door panels. Numerous smart storage spaces are cleverly integrated throughout the cabin, perfect for stowing away your phone, keys, wallet, and even your laptop. As the most affordable model in Volvo's lineup, the XC40 showcases a smart mix of materials and designs that appeal to its target young demographic.

Performance

After driving both the gasoline and diesel versions, I found that Volvo doesn't aim for the XC40 to be the fastest or most sporty compact SUV. Instead, it strikes an impressive balance between a comfortable ride provided by its smooth yet firm suspension and strong acceleration.

Its 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, producing 247 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque, delivers a smooth driving experience through an 8-speed automatic transmission, allowing the XC40 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds.

The diesel engine, which is not available in the UAE but may be in other Middle Eastern countries, is modern and distinct from traditional diesel engines. With a displacement of 1.969 liters, this engine generates 190 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque.

Final Verdict

Volvo XC40 Rear

Although the XC40 is a newcomer to Volvo's lineup, it embodies the brand's commitment to quality. With a starting price of 170,000 AED, it not only stands out among its competitors but is also likely to become one of Volvo's best-selling models. I can confidently say that the 2018 Volvo XC40 is a winning vehicle in every aspect, destined to attract attention worldwide.
