Roewe RX5: Alibaba's First Internet-Connected Car
Introduction to Alibaba's Automotive Innovation
Alibaba, a Chinese internet giant and e-commerce company founded in 1999 by Jack Ma, has established itself as the largest retail platform in the world as of 2016. The company has introduced its first extraordinary internet-connected car, the Roewe RX5.
About the Roewe RX5
The Roewe RX5, developed in collaboration with state-owned manufacturer SAIC, marks Alibaba's entry into the automotive industry after a year of extensive research. Deliveries are set to commence in August, and the Roewe RX5 is already available for pre-order. The car features a smart dashboard powered by Alibaba’s YunOS, which also operates devices such as phones, tablets, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
Unique Features of the Roewe RX5
According to the video above, Alibaba executives highlight the RX5's unique capability to pay for fuel without the driver needing to use a credit card or mobile application. Thanks to its web connectivity, the vehicle can even send a signal to home A/C units to turn on before the driver arrives—a significant advantage in the sweltering heat of the UAE, had the Roewe RX5 been available in this market.
Engine Specifications and Pricing
The Roewe RX5 will offer engines believed to be a 1.5-liter turbo and a 2.0-liter turbo, with prices ranging from approximately AED 55,000 to AED 103,000 depending on the feature sets. Additionally, Baidu, another Chinese web giant, is collaborating with BMW to develop driverless cars in China.
