The Legend Returns!
The all-new Toyota Supra is finally here after a long wait from its fans around the world, including myself, showcasing a fresh design and advanced technology. After 17 years and a collaboration with BMW, we now have the new generation. Will it still be regarded as a legend in Japanese automotive history, or will it lose its prestigious title that it held for so many years?
Exterior Design
The design of the new Supra is striking from every angle, inspired by the stunning FT-1 concept car revealed in 2014. What's impressive is that Toyota has taken this concept design into production. While the older Supra was based on a GT car with four seats, the new Supra features a more compact sports car design.
The car shares the same dimensions as the Toyota 86 but is smaller inside and out, with a lower height, wider stance, and a shorter wheelbase, making its driving experience distinctly different from its smaller sibling, the 86.
One of the most astounding design elements in the new Supra is the number of fake vents along the body:
- Eight fake vents located on both the front bumpers, hood, and rear bumpers.
- Sources suggest that these vents can open when needed.
Interior Design
Inside the cabin, the German design influence is evident, with the new Supra's interior boasting a luxurious and meticulously crafted aesthetic, drawing inspiration from older BMW models. The buttons and small parts are sourced from the German company, which might detract slightly from Toyota's character.
The Supra features a low seating position that enhances its status as a true sports car. Key features include:
- JBL audio system with 12 speakers.
- Dual-zone climate control system.
- 8.8-inch infotainment display.
- Adaptive cruise control and power seats.
Driving Experience
The all-new Toyota Supra is equipped with the BMW B58 engine, featuring a six-cylinder inline configuration. Although the engine originates from BMW, Toyota's racing division, "Gazoo Racing," has added its unique touch.
The engine of the new Supra produces 335 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, making it a high-performance sports car with a passion for driving. You can press the accelerator hard for some tire-burning fun before the traction control kicks in.
The exhaust system can be opened and closed based on the driving mode, and when using the "Sport" mode, you can enjoy the exhilarating sound of the exhaust. The car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds.
However, the steering feel may be a drawback, as it lacks the essential communication between the driver and the car.
Final Verdict
With a price tag of 229,000, the 2020 Toyota Supra is a sports car that appeals to many car enthusiasts. It's great to see the Supra name return, but the numerous similarities in specifications with the BMW Z4 make it challenging to consider it a legendary Japanese vehicle.
