The global launch of the 2017 Audi A5 held in Porto, Portugal was an extremely gala affair and one that allowed us to get up-close and personal with the striking all-new Audi A5 and its brawnier, more powerful sibling, the Audi S5. Taking a closer look at the exterior, interior and performance of some of Germany’s finest, we find out how Audi’s newest offerings stack up against their rivals.

Exterior

The Audi A5 has always been a very distinct and recognizable model in the German marque’s line-up. Ensuring it continues to stand out, the designers have opted for tauter lines and crisper contours, injecting the bodywork with personality and presence. In turn, the 2017 Audi A5 emerges looking nothing short of an automotive masterpiece.

On the other hand, the Audi S5 opts for the more aggressive, flamboyant route. Subtle differences in the grille and splitter come together to lend the S5 a more intimidating countenance. Larger wheels, side mirrors finished in a silver hue, a prominent rear diffuser and quad tail-pipes, all help differentiate the S5 further.

Interior

Retaining the driver-oriented aura of the cabin found in its predecessor, the 2017 Audi A5 sees a vast improvement in terms of design. Bidding farewell to the drooping air vents and cluttered center console, the all-new model favors a horizontal architecture embellished with wood trim, supple leather and dashes of chrome.

The performance inclined version receives a flat-bottom steering wheel, aluminum pedals, quilted leather seats and a scattering of S5 badges serving as gentle reminders of what lies beneath the hood.  But while minor differences differentiate the two models, both benefit from more space due to increased dimensions and a longer wheelbase.

Performance

Residing at the heart of the A5 is a 2.0 liter TFSI engine which churns out 252 horsepower and is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. With 800 new pieces within the engine itself and a saving of 60 kilograms (14 kilograms from the engine alone) over the previous model, it is evident that the all-new Audi A5 is a giant leap in the right direction.

On the 2017 Audi S5, the improvements are equally impressive with the turbocharged 3.0 liter V6 producing 354 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque – a jump of 21 horsepower over the previous model. With overall weight savings and a drag coefficient of just 0.25, the Audi A5 range is not only agile and fun to drive, but a segment leader in terms of aerodynamics.
