With its striking exterior, powerful specs and luxurious features, it should not be surprising that the E Class Saloon is one of the most popular high-end luxury cars in Qatar, along with rival BMW’s 5 Series. The E Class represents a line of executive cars from the German carmaker that also includes the Cabriolet and the Coupe, and five generations have been issued since 1993. There are six available versions of the Saloon with a price range of QAR 193,000 to QAR 498,000.

Exterior

The 2018 Saloon has been redesigned to improve its aerodynamic performance, lowering its drag coefficient and opening and closing the vents to maximize its aero efficiency. Other striking visual design elements include a distinctive front grille with powerful LED headlights and the three-pointed star Mercedes Benz emblem prominently displayed, and a strong rear section with wraparound LED taillights.

Interior

The five-seat cabin is spacious and boasts of a luxurious feel enhanced by rich leather upholstered seats and warm ambient lighting with 64 different settings. The infotainment system boasts of a 12.5-inch touchscreen display combined with the COMAND online system. The driver has the option to control the system from the steering wheel using touch-sensitive buttons and finger-swipes. The seats are also very comfortable, and the driver’s seat can be adjusted to accommodate multiple heights.

Features

One of the main selling points of the Saloon, apart from its premium feel, is its superior cruising performance. It features a new Drive Pilot enhanced adaptive cruise control that gives you a smooth ride, even over bad roads, and absorbs the impact from bumps. Overall, the Saloon delivers a dynamic driving experience that will leave you feeling relaxed after you leave the car, even if you’ve just had a 200-kilometer drive.

Specs

The Saloon comes with either a 2.0L, a 3.0L, or a 4.0-liter engine with horsepower ranging from 184 to 612. Fuel economy ranges from 5.9L/100 km to 9.1L/100 km and the time to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr. ranges from 7.7 secs to 3.4 secs.

Verdict

If you’re in the market for a luxury car, considerations such as price and fuel economy are clearly not foremost on your mind. In terms of top speed and time to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr., the two rivals also have comparable specs. In terms of handling and overall performance, however, the BMW seems to have the edge.
