489 motorists suspended from driving in the UAE

Traffic authorities in the Capital have taken necessary action by banning a whopping 489 motorists from driving for three months in the UAE. In the period from January 1st to September 30th 2016, Abu Dhabi Police have confiscated licenses of holders who have crossed 24 traffic black points by committing a variety of offences from driving on the hard shoulder to over speeding.

Following the temporary ban and confiscation of licenses, Brigadier Ahmad Abdullah Al Shehi, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police, reminded those whose licenses have been suspended not to drive any vehicle during their suspension period.

“Any motorist banned from driving by court order or licensing authority, will be imprisoned for a period not exceeding three months and fined an amount not less than Dh5,000, in accordance with the traffic points registration system under article No (50) of the Federal Law No 21 of 1995 which was amended by Federal Law No 12 of 2007,” he said.

Under the Federal Law, 72 traffic violations are listed with their respective black points and corresponding fiscal fines. Motorists jumping a red light, for instance, are penalized with eight black points and a sizeable monetary fine.

12 traffic points are issued for offences such as dangerous driving that endangers others’ lives and for speeding well over the limit. Instances that result in an immediate confiscation of the driver’s license include, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving a vehicle with no number plate, or fleering an accident scene that resulted in casualties.

A total of 24 black points leads to the confiscation of the driver’s license, vehicle, and monetary fines.
