Abu Dhabi Police Installs Flash-Less Cameras

Posted by Mansoor A. Bukhari on Jul 13, 2014

Abu Dhabi Police has been tackling speeding motorists on intersections with their new initiative of installing special infrared cameras that capture violators on images without flash on all lanes. From Tuesday, 36 more intersections will have these new cameras thus bringing the total number to 146.

These cameras have 3D thermal imaging to capture more than 5 lanes in each direction and are multipurpose. They can read license plates, identify type of car, calculate average speed and identify the number of pedestrians on intersections. Moreover this system is linked to the notifications and text messaging system.

The violations detected by these cameras include:

- Jumping red light

- Unsafe lane changes

- Stopping over crosswalk lines

- Exceeding speed limits

- Overtaking at junctions

- Making turns/U-turn from wrong lanes
