Since being first released in 2016, the second-generation Toyota Fortuner has been one of the most popular cars in the UAE. Utilizing the same platform as the popular Hilux pickup truck, the Fortuner has carved a reputation for being a highly versatile SUV that offers a lot of value for buyers.

Exterior

With a refreshed exterior design for 2016, the 2017 Fortuner carries little design changes from the previous year’s model. Slightly smaller and narrower compared to the Land Cruiser, the Fortuner still occupies a lot of space, plus it looks larger than it really is. Ground clearance is slightly lower for this model, presumably to improve its stance and its on-road handling capabilities.

Interior

The Fortuner boasts a high-quality interior that you come to expect with an automobile built by Toyota. High-quality materials are used for the trim and that premium-looking fit and finish. The amount of space in the cabin is remarkable. It can provide comfortable seating for 5 full-sized adults, 7 if the third-row seats are used. Luggage space is also abundant. With the third-row seats folded, cargo space climbs up to more than 700 liters, matching that of larger SUVs.

Features

The 2017 Fortuner comes loaded with all kinds of amenities. It features air conditioning vents in all 3 rows, ensuring that everyone rides in full comfort even in the intense heat of the UAE. There are also interesting features such as drink compartments and a trio of 12-volt outlets. The 225mm ride height, combined with a high approach and departure angle, give the Fortuner enough clearance to overcome most obstacles.

Specs

The Fortuner utilizes a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum output of 160 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. A more powerful 4.0-liter V6 engine is also available. Using the underpinnings of the Hilux certainly has its advantages. It features the 4-wheel drive system of the Hilux, giving it superior off-road capabilities. Combine that with an upgraded suspension featuring coil springs in the rear, and you have comfortable yet very capable all-terrain weapon.

Verdict

Combining great performance and remarkable refinement at a stellar price, the 2017 Toyota Fortuner provides a great option for those looking for an affordably-priced SUV. With prices starting at AED 110,000, this workhorse from Toyota provides a lot of bang for the buck.
