The 8 Series nameplate is one that BMW fanboys and followers of the brand are well aware of. With its sights set on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, the Munich-based manufacturer has plans of scrapping the planned 9 Series and resurrecting the 8 Series moniker.

Back in May, it was discovered that the German manufacturer had registered a number of nameplates, indicating models we can expect in the near future. Registered badges include but are not limited to, 825, 835, 850, M850 and M8, for the halo model of the range.

The 8 Series, one of the last BMW models to be built on the CLAR architecture that currently underpins the 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series models, is set to feature the technology of the 7 Series, but be lighter and more agile than its S-Class rival.

As a direct consequence of the introduction of the BMW 8 Series, the 6 Series Gran Coupe will be eliminated from the line-up, and will see it handing over the Gran Coupe insignia to the upcoming 5 Series GT.

Although a four-door 8 Series is not on the cards, for fears of cannibalizing on the profits of the 7 Series, the Munich-based manufacturer’s line-up is in for a major overhaul.
