Toyota understands the benefits of partnering with fellow automakers fairly well. After all, the joint partnership with Subaru led to the roaring success of the affordable and headline-generating Toyota 86. While the German-Japanese relationship between BMW and Toyota dates back to 2011, it seems like the two automakers are working together for replacements of the Z4 and GT86 respectively.

Unlike the Toyota-Subaru alliance that saw the production of near identical offerings, the BMW-Toyota partnership sees the two automakers agreeing to create different body styles to maximize differentiation. While BMW will stick to a roadster with a folding soft-top, Toyota will manufacture a tin-top coupe.

The good news is that the BMW - codenamed G29 and potentially wearing the Z5 badge - has been signed off and is out for testing, meaning the Toyota GT86 and Supra shouldn’t be too far behind! While the camouflage is extensive and the tail lamps are temporary, a twin-exit exhaust is visible on the Z5.

Taking into account that it’s a BMW, four and six-cylinder engines can be expected with the Z5M generating 450 horsepower with a trademark straight-six turbo power plant.
