Ahead of its debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW has introduced enthusiasts and the world to the all-new and highly controversial BMW M5 2018. Having traded its signature Rear-Wheel-Drive layout for an arguably better All-Wheel-Drive platform, the F90 M5 is one that is bound to make its way into the history books.

With power swelling to levels that would simply shred the rear tires, the all-new M5 features the latest edition of the brand’s 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 to channel 600-horsepower and 750 Nm of torque through an eight-speed ZF transmission. When powering all four wheels, the BMW M5 2018 hits 100 km/h in a neck-snapping 3.4-seconds and 200 km/h in 11.1-seconds, making it the fastest accelerating BMW of all time.

“Thanks to M xDrive, the new BMW M5 goes beyond the precise, agile drive that we’ve come to expect – it also serves up a noticeable boost in traction and controllability, both in everyday situations and at the dynamic limit.” said former Formula One driver and BMW works driver, Timo Glock.

Although top speed is restricted to 250 km/h, the limiter can be bumped up to a that’s-more-like-it 305 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package. Numerous drive modes (4WD DSC, 4WD Sport, 2WD) allow the all-new M5 to transform from a track annihilating weapon to an outright hooligan in a matter of seconds.

What BMW has made sure of, however, is that even in the simplest of settings, the M5 offers a decent amount of slip before reeling the car back in. The “4WD Sport” mode switches the stability control system to “M Dynamic Mode” for greater rear-wheel bias, more slip and better angles. Unleashing its full potential, the “2WD” mode disconnects the front axle completely and allows the driver to engage in an intimate moment of man and machine.
