BMW to build lighter 7 Series

The current generation BMW 7 Series has been available since 2009 so it is about time we get to hear about the successor. Good news is that the new 7 series is already going heavy testing before the car officially gets unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next year. Since this is the flagship model, it has to highlight the brands key metrics – one of which is agility. So, to achieve that, the prime objective in developing the new 7 series is weight reduction, 200 kg to be precise. This is going to be achieved through the usage of combination of aluminum, magnesium, steel and carbonfibre-reinforced plastic. This process was earlier adopted on the i3 and i8 and has given fruitful results. In this way, the new upcoming 740i will weigh about 1650 kg – same as 535i. Other changes in the new 7 series include:

- New 4.0 liter V8 and turbocharged 4 cylinder engines

- 9-speed auto

- Possibility of an M7 producing 600+ BHP from the M5’s heavily tuned 4.4 liter V8

- Hybrid option

- Design cues of the Future Luxury concept
