Can the Rolls Royce Spirit of Ecstasy be stolen?

Hood ornaments play a much greater role than merely adding panache to the design of a vehicle. By helping distinguish and by adding character to a vehicle, they’re an important part of the overall design and the iconic Rolls Royce Spirit of Ecstasy, is no exception to this rule.

Depicting a woman leaning forwards with her arms outstretched behind her and a billowing cloth to resemble wings, the hood ornament of a Rolls Royce is one of the most identifiable and sought-after in the world.

 

Being part of a Rolls Royce, the Spirit of Ecstasy is created with the same level of precision and dedication as the rest of the vehicle. Recognizing the issue of emblem theft over a decade ago, the British marque introduced an over engineered mechanism that retracts the emblem when it is tampered with.

Although the suave salesman in the video doesn’t put up much of a fight, judging from the speed at which it retracts into the hood, it probably is best not to get your fingers caught in. So there you have it folks, the Spirit of Ecstasy cannot be casually yanked off the hood of a Rolls-Royce, unless you’re well equipped, of course.
