Card Payment Now Enabled in All Abu Dhabi Taxis

All 6,180 taxis that make up the Abu Dhabi public taxi fleet are now equipped to accept card-based fare payments, the Department of Municipalities, and Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) announced earlier this week. A long time coming, the feature has been rolled out to further limit contact between drivers and commuters to further curb the spread of the coronavirus.

In accordance with government regulations, all commuters must wear face masks and gloves when riding a taxi and be seated in the back. While a plastic sheet has been installed in all vehicles separating the passengers and drivers and hand sanitizers have been placed in all taxis, no more than two passengers are allowed per ride.

To pay for a fare using a credit/debit card, commuters need to pre-install the Abu Dhabi Taxi application from the Apple Store or Play Store and register with their personal details. The Integrated Transport Center (ITC) also added that the card payment feature will greatly benefit tourists who will not need to carry cash to pay for their trip.
