The Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Egypt was a nail biting affair. With the game evenly balanced at 0-0 after 120 minutes, the winner of the title was decided via a tense penalty shootout. Senegal’s star player Sadio Mane stepped up and converted but it was goalkeeper Edouard Mendy who saved two penalties and ensured Senegal got its first ever AFCON title.

The Chelsea goalkeeper was awarded the Best Goalkeeper Award for Africa Cup of Nations 2021 (AFCON) - an award that was proudly sponsored by tyre-manufacturer Continental. Mendy won the trophy and a prize of US$ 10.000 which was given to him by Jon Ander Garcia, Regional Manager M.E.A.R.T (Middle East, Africa, Russia & Turkey) for Continental Tires.

“As an official sponsor of the Africa Cup of Nations 2021, we are proud to have been the exclusive sponsors of the Best Goalkeeper Award,” Garcia said at the AFCON 2021 awards ceremony. “As the team’s last line of defence, the keeper’s role in safeguarding the goalmouth reflects Continental’s own safety values, having pioneered road safety for the past 150 years.”
