Reigning from Japan and ready for a brawl, the red corner of the ring sees the Mitsubishi Outlander brush its gloves and sit still – in an almost meditative state – calm and composed waiting for the strike of the bell. In the blue corner, the presumptuous Nissan X Trail walks in to the cacophony of screaming fans and flexes its muscles, as a brave display of intimidation and sheer might. The crowd cheers and it’s on, 3,2,1…FIGHT!
Exterior
In its third-generation, the understated Mitsubishi Outlander lacks the sharp creases and head turning design of its rival. Featuring chrome along the grille and fog lamp housings, along with a set of LED tail lamps, the Outlander fits well with the rest of the Mitsubishi line-up but struggles to hold a candle up to the sleeker and sportier X Trail. Interior
Pleasant to look at, the simplistic cabin of the Mitsubishi Outlander is embellished with a generous amount of gloss black trim and faux wood along the dashboard, center console, and door panels, to give the impression of a more refined vehicle. No match for the striking two-tone finish of the X Trail, however, the offering from Yokohama dons an aura that is both more modern and more welcoming. Biff!
Performance
Matched very closely to its more agile rival, the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander is armed with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that pushes out 170 horsepower and 222 Nm of torque through a CVT transmission to a Front-Wheel-Drive layout. The tad punchier Nissan X Trail, with its 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, knocks out 171 horsepower and 226 Nm via the brands infamous CVT gearbox. Kapow!

Verdict
Flat on the ground and gasping for air, the referee approaches the Mitsubishi Outlander but it is unable to put up a tough fight with its unjustified starting price of AED 77,900. Flaunting a price of AED 84,000, the X Trail sprints the perimeter of the ring, delivers one final blow, and that’s that. K.O!
