ESMA to approve all automotive spare parts in UAE from October

Cracking down on counterfeit automotive spare parts in the UAE, Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) is set to implement a new vehicle safety system from October in the UAE. Governing the sale and use of auto spare parts across the Emirates, the regulation will initially focus on new parts, preventing those without the ESMA quality mark from entering and being sold in the market.
Abdullah Al Muaini, Director General of ESMA, said: “Standards are being implemented in coordination with local authorities who will monitor the market. The regulation is part of ESMA’s strategy to regulate the transport sector and vehicles in a comprehensive and integrated manner to ensure safety of vehicles on the roads of the UAE.”
Local traders around the country have been given one year to get rid of all non-complying parts in the market. The new regulations are set to cover several aspects of the auto spare parts industry, from manufacturing and packaging, to transportation, storage, and usage of the parts. According to officials, a master database will be created with information about all spare parts manufactured or imported into the country.
As per ESMA’s plans to regulate the transport sector, the next stage is set to see workshops across the UAE categorized according to the services they offer with each of them receiving a rating. The objective is to create a central portal for motorists to search for the right garage for their vehicles and needs.
