People who smoke in the car with the presence of a child, 12 years old and under, will be fined Dh500, and the fine will double if the violation was repeated. On Monday, UAE Cabinet approved its bylaws to start being strict on the violators and enforce the federal Anti-Tobacco Law that was first passed in 2010.

“I am very glad that the bylaws have been passed,” said Dr Wedad Al Maidoor, head of the National Tobacco Control Committee at the health ministry. “Enforcement should start within a couple of months now … we will be ready to take action after the holy month of Ramadan,” she said, adding that  the traffic police will begin training soon.

Dr. Wedad also said that now people who used to violate this law will think twice before lighting up the cigarette.

There will also be fines for those who violate the ban on advertising, those who import tobacco without proper warnings and those who place cigarette displays near the cashier.
