The Chevrolet Corvette is known as the bargain supercar with its undercut pricing. However, when it comes to special models like the first ever production model of the first ever hybrid 'Vette, the E-Ray, prices rise up a bit. Yes, you read that headline correctly, the first retail Corvette E-Ray has sold for a whopping $1.15 million at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction.

The blue car in the picture isn’t the one sold as it is just a pre-production model. Once production begins, the buyer will be able to configure their dream ‘Vette and will also be getting it with the coveted 001 VIN plate. All the $1.15 million will go to DonorsChoose, a charity dedicated to helping teachers and public schools.

Talking about the car, the Chevy Corvette E-Ray is powered by a 6.2L Small Block V-8 in the rear and an electric motor on the front axle making it the first all-wheel drive Corvette. The gasoline engine and electric motor produce a combined 655 horsepower and help the car propel to 62mph in just 2.5 seconds.

"General Motors and Chevrolet are proud to join DonorsChoose on its mission of combating inequality in school funding by providing underserved communities with the resources needed for a quality education," said Steve Majoros, chief marketing officer at Chevrolet. "The Corvette E-Ray is a special product for Chevrolet, and we are honored that the proceeds from the sale of VIN 001 will aid this organization in supporting students and teachers around the nation."
