Ford confirms Mustang Mach 1 to slot between GT and Shelby models

An exciting time for motoring aficionados, Ford confirms production of the Mustang Mach 1 and its objective to fill up a hole in the pony car’s line-up between the affordable GT and the more extreme Shelby GT350. The iconic ‘Mach 1’ nameplate returns on the 2021 Mustang, which Ford teases as “the epitome of naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 performance in a new golden age of power.”

Dave Pericak, Director at Ford Icons, said: “Mach 1 has a special place in Mustang history, and it’s time for this special edition to claim the top spot in our 5.0-liter V8 performance lineup and reward our most hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who demand that next level of power, precision and collectability.”

Although Ford is not revealing much, they have said that the Mustang Mach 1 will be the “most track-ready 5.0-liter Mustang ever.” The teaser images reveal a more aggressive bumper and two circular air intakes (or fog light holes) in the grille – harking back to the original 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1.  The rearview is equally exciting with a sizeable spoiler and massive quad exhausts flanking the diffuser. Upon closer inspection, big red Brembo calipers can be seen behind the 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 305/30 ZR19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 performance tires.

As for power, we can expect the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 powered Mustang Mach 1 to deliver in the region of 500 horsepower, which could make sense since some claim the Mach 1 will effectively replace the 480 horsepower, Mustang Bullitt. Whether that is true or not, we will have to wait and watch; all that we can say for now is that we’re extremely excited!
