From serving militaries and humanitarian forces, to explorers and adventurers all across the globe, we discover the heritage and history behind one of the most iconic models on the streets of the UAE.

First-Generation Model

In 1951, Nissan unveiled its 4W Series with the 4W60 model which featured a flat hood and a large grille with a pressed-steel Nissan insignia. Measuring 3,615mm long, the first-generation Patrol was powered by a 3.7-liter engine which put out 75 horsepower and 206 Nm of torque. Within a few years, the Patrol had developed a reputation for being tough, reliable and usable in some of the most inhospitable places in the world.

Second-Generation Model

The 60 series of the Nissan Patrol went into production in October 1960 and remained so for nearly two decades, until June 1980 when the last model rolled off the production line. During its time, the Patrol grew from strength to strength as it had found its way into homes and organizations all across the globe. While initial models produced 125 horsepower, changes to the compression ratio, carburetor and valve timing saw power figures bumped up to 145 horsepower in 1965.

Third-Generation Model

The third-generation model which began production in 1980, didn’t run for as long as its predecessor. While all models were available with a four-speed manual transmission, a 3-speed automatic made its way into the line-up on long wheelbase versions. Eight years after its debut, the third-generation model was ceremoniously put to rest as the fourth-generation model prepared for its launch.

Fourth-Generation Model

The Y60, an Emirati favorite, was introduced to the world in 1987 and featured technology like never before. The leaf springs were swapped out for coil springs, meaning added comfort and capability, while some models even benefitted with a rear differential lock. The line-up comprised of 3.0-liter and a 4.2-liter engines, with outputs of 134 horsepower and 181 horsepower respectively.

Fifth-Generation Model

Dubbed the “new-age Patrol”, the Y61 model which featured in 1997 showcased greater technology, greater comfort, and greater styling than the model it replaced. While the fifth-generation model saw a significant facelift in 2004, it continues to be sold in markets such as the UAE, as the Patrol Safari.

Sixth-generation Model

The Y62 series, launched a day before Valentines’ Day in 2010, is the most luxurious model to date. But don’t be fooled, it hasn’t let go of any of its off-road capability. With a 5.6-liter V8 engine under the hood, producing 400 horsepower and 560 Nm of torque, it is the most powerful model to dawn the Patrol nameplate yet.
