Honda shocks all and patents 11 speed transmission

At parties, games, and networking events, the statement “more the merrier” tends to holds true. In the automotive space and when referring to transmissions, however, we’re not quite sure. In an effort to one-up Ford’s 10-speed transmission, Honda has filed a patent for a 11-speed, tri-clutch transmission. Yes, that’s right, it looks like the days of the single-clutch transmission have hit the end of the road.

In an attempt to reduce fuel consumption, the patent filed by the automotive giant describes the third clutch as a means to reduce the drop in torque when shifting cogs on a dual-clutch transmission. The end result, is expected to be improved fuel economy and rapid gear changes.

As Honda is a pioneer of the technology, with no manufacturer attempting anything quite like it, it is still too early to determine how many shafts would be required in the transmission, or how exactly they were to be laid out.

With the entire concept still being at the patent stage, it is unclear when Honda is looking to introduce the world to its newest creation, or if it will manufacture it at all. What’s interesting, however, is to try and guess what car it would debut the 11-speed transmission in; an Accord or the next NSX?
