Motoring enthusiasts across the globe are well acquainted with Mazda’s rotary engines, and if recent reports are anything to go by, the Japanese brand is set to revive the RX nameplate with an RX 9 that is scheduled to debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

Launched in 1967, the Mazda Cosmo Sport was the brand’s first rotary powered vehicle, and the RX 9 is believed to mark the model’s 50th anniversary. Successor to the RX 7 which ceased production in 2002, the RX 9 is reported to weigh less than 1,300 kg and feature a 1.6-liter SKYACTIV-R engine with twin 800cc rotors.

The Wankel engine, in combination with a turbocharger, is believed to churn out upwards of 400 horsepower. Get the calculator out and that equates to a power-to-weight ratio of 0.1395 hp / kg – nearly on par with the likes of the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. Add 50/50 weight distribution to the front and rear, and you’ve got an exciting offering in the works.

With prices expected to be at a smidgen under AED 300,000, the Mazda RX 9 has been a long time coming, but something tells us the wait is going to be well worth it.
