Meet Volvo’s small EV: the EX30 SUV

Posted by Tejas Kokcha on Jul 11, 2023

A big problem that people are having with electric vehicles is that they are too big. Volvo has addressed this problem with its “small but mighty” EX30 SUV, and doesn’t it look cute.

Volvo says that the EX30 SUV has the smallest CO2 footprint of any Volvo car to date and looks to make people’s lives more convenient with its Scandinavian design.

“There’s no such thing as simply ‘a battery’ when we discuss powertrains,” says Volvo in the EX30’s press release. The Swedish carmaker is offering the EX30 with three powertrain options and two different battery types so that customers can choose according to their needs.

For people looking to use the EX30 in the city, the LFP standard-range battery is recommended. If you want maximum range then the NMC battery offering 480 kms of range should be your choice.

Last but not the least, the Twin Motor Performance variant with an NMC battery paired with a secondary motor is available for the performance enthusiasts. The Twin Motor Performance variant comes with all wheel drive and 428hp; with its 0-100 km/h time of 3.6 seconds it is the fastest accelerating Volvo ever.

The standard-range EX30 has a charging capacity of 134kW, whereas the extended-range Twin Motor variant has a capacity of up to 153kW. This means that the EX30 can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in around 25 minutes.

Options are aplenty for the interior as well with Volvo offering four distinct interior rooms. All the options will be having a single-screen UX running the latest version of the carmaker’s infotainment system, with Google built-in.

The EX30 is also the first Volvo to have the next-generation version of Park Assist Pilot which can “handle all types of parking spaces, including parallel, curved, perpendicular and diagonal fishbone-style.”

“The fully electric EX30 might be our smallest ever SUV, but it’s a big deal for our customers and a big deal for us as a company,” said Jim Rowan, Volvo chief executive.

He further said, “We like to say the EX30 is small yet mighty, because it delivers on everything you'd want from a Volvo but in a smaller package. Like any Volvo, it’s an outstanding product which is safe and designed around people and their needs.”

The EX30 will be available in the UAE from Q1 2024. No information regarding the pricing in the region has been released by Volvo.
