Prior to its regional unveiling at Manarat Al Saadiyat on 28th August, the Mercedes Benz S Class 2018 breaks cover with a plethora of changes gracing the entire line-up from the entry-level model to the exquisite AMG variants and the extravagant Maybach range.

Based on aesthetics alone, there isn’t much to differentiate the mid-cycle refresh from the outgoing model, apart from subtly altered bumpers, revised headlamps, altered trims, and new wheel designs. Revised nomenclature sees the introduction of S450 and S560 insignias to the line-up, indicating V6 and V8 engines respectively.

The S450 is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that pushes out 362-horspower, while the beefier S560’s downsized 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 unit produces a remarkable 463 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. On both iterations, the engines are mated to nine-speed automatic transmissions.

Taking back its rightful place as the most technologically advanced offering in the brand’s line-up, the 2018 Mercedes Benz S Class features an all-new adaptive cruise control system that uses map data to slow the vehicle down for impending curves, turns, and roundabouts, and permits for automatic lane changes with the active lane-change assist kicking in at a tap of the indicator stalk.

The biggest change for long-time Mercedes-Benz fans is likely to be the banishment of the cruise control stalk near the crowded indicator stalk and steering column adjustment joystick. The iconic cruise control stalk is replaced by buttons on the all-new steering wheel, which also features touch-sensitive pads akin to those found on the Mercedes Benz E-Class.

Updated or not, the Mercedes Benz S Class remains in a class of its own.
