Nefud 2024: Progress update and Meeting with His Royal Highness, Prince Khalid

Posted by Anas Assaf on May 22, 2023

In May 2024 an expedition from the UK will set off to cross the Nefud desert in Northern Saudi Arabia by pathfinding a new route across this remote and arid area. The Nefud 2024 team plans to be the first to demonstrate the use of alternative power as a viable option for expedition vehicles to transport the team, supplies and equipment across this off-road, challenging terrain.

“We are confident that we can practically utilize either fully electric or hybrid vehicles for the expedition and have designed the route to incorporate adequate charge points”, Team Leader, Dr Alan Crofts told us. He added, “We have partnered with the UK company BiPVco Ltd who develop innovative mobile solar energy technology and will be taking their cutting edge flexible energy transducing mats on the expedition -  this will enable us to top up the vehicle batteries and charge our equipment”. The team are also looking at the possibility of using biofuel to power a diesel support vehicle that could also be used to provide back up charge.

Excitingly, the team were recently invited to the Saudi Arabia Embassy in London to meet with the Ambassador, His Royal Highness Prince Khalid. “His Royal Highness was very interested to hear about the expedition and our plans to use vehicles with alternative fuel sources”, says Alan. “He pledged his personal support for the expedition and promised his aid in ensuring the success of the project”. “He provided inspiring ideas and insightful advice”.  An official reception for the team is being planned in Riyadh in May 2024 prior to their journey to the Nefud region.

Alan will keep us posted with frequent updates as the expedition plans for departure in 2024.

More information on the expedition and team member can be found at their website: https://www.nefudexpedition2024.org/

The team are looking for sponsorship to provide off-road capable fully electric or hybrid vehicles and for financial backing in return for considerable high-profile media and PR exposure.
