Nefud Desert: Eco-Friendly Vehicle Exploration

Posted by Ahmad Rashad Al Zeer on Oct 15, 2023

let's dive into the Nefud Desert, a massive dry stretch up in the north of the Arabian Peninsula. It's one of those untamed, breathtaking places that love to keep its secrets close. Not like the Rub' al Khali, the famous one that steals the desert show. But mark my words, the Nefud Desert has its own magic. It's got a mix of features that'll catch your eye and geology that'll make your head spin.

Now, picture this: May 2024, a crew from the UK is prepping to take on the Nefud Desert, up there in the northern slice of Saudi Arabia. But hold on, they're not just doing the regular desert-crossing thing. Nope, these people are set to blaze a fresh trail, a path no one's trodden in this remote, bone-dry land before.

This UK expedition, "Nefud 2024 – Striking the Sun’s Anvil" in May 2024, is gearing up to be the first to cross this remote desert using vehicles powered by alternative, carbon-friendly sources like electric and bio-fuel, along with good ol' solar energy. Locally, the Nefud is known as the legendary "Sun’s Anvil" – a place so rugged and isolated that locals used to believe it was impassable during daylight. This harsh yet stunning region is all about sandstorms, dust devils, and midday mirages. The team of six is charting a fresh course, navigating their way across the landscape, with the goal of showing that remote expeditions can be done with minimal carbon footprint rides.

And here's the twist—they're doing it in style, showcasing the brilliant concept of using alternative power for their expedition vehicles. Picture yourself trekking through this rugged terrain with the energy of the future. They've got major support from Prince Khalid, the Saudi Ambassador to the UK. He's all in, giving them the green light and rallying companies and organizations to back this venture. They're aiming for electric and biofueled vehicles, but here's the hitch—they need to find a company in Saudi Arabia that supplies biodiesel.

Dr. Alan Crofts, the head honcho of this expedition, says, “His Royal Highness is right behind our venture and our goals”. “He's pledged his support and is personally encouraging businesses and institutions to aid our mission. We've got massive interest from the Saudi Arabian media and can offer a hefty promotional deal to any company keen on investing in our expedition” Alan added, “We're confident we can practically roll with either fully electric or biofueled vehicles for the expedition, and we've mapped out the route with enough charging spots”. Plus, he mentioned, “We're bringing along some cutting-edge solar panels that'll help us top up the vehicle batteries and charge our gear”.
