Residents in Dubai’s Al Khail Gate community have for long had to deal with the struggle of finding a place to park. Fed up with the lack of parking spaces and the fines for parking violations that followed, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced a Dh4 per hour around-the-clock parking fee in the popular residential area.

Hussain Al Banna, Executive Director of Traffic at RTA, said: “The RTA will take over the management and operation of parking lots at Al Khail Gate Community in the second quarter of this year. The parking lot at Al Khail Gate Community has been classified into different zones with certain spaces reserved for residents and others for visitors.”

The primary focus of this move is to discourage non-residential vehicles (such as rent-a-car fleets) that are often parked for long periods within the community. Residents may avail parking permits which include an annual permit for Dh2,500, a six month permit for Dh1,500, or a three month permit for Dh1,000. The benefit of the permit is that it allows residents to make in both zones, residential and visitor zones.

Despite the new move and the added expenses, residents of the community remain skeptical if this will truly improve the parking shortage they are facing.
