Road Safety Issues in UAE

More than 6,000 issues have been identified in Abu Dhabi by a survey of high-risk areas and corridors, said Majed Al Kathiri, head of traffic services section and road safety at Abu Dhabi Municipality.

"We need to intervene urgently to treat the most dangerous sites and our plan for 2011 to 2015 covers all high-risk areas," Mr Al Kathiri said, adding that a budget of Dh300 million has been set for this period by the municipality.

Some of the plans include; more speed bumps, more guardrails, bigger sizes of zebra crossing and drop kerbs, new fences at main and arterial routes in Abu Dhabi, visual cues to improce speed control, safety zones outside 240 schools and more.

The above mentioned plans are part of Abu Dhabi's response to the Decade of Action on Road Safety, a global policy movement prompted by the UN, which started in May 2011.

As reported by The National newspaper.
