RTA expands Smart Parking service in Dubai

Finding a parking space in Dubai’s busiest areas is now easier with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) expanding its Smart Parking system across the city. Introduced earlier on the bustling Sheikh Zayed Road and in Deira’s Baniyas area, the system is now being expanded to Al Rigga, Dubai World Trade Center, and further down Sheikh Zayed Road too.

A total of 2,030 ground sensors and 70 overhead cameras allow easy access to a whopping 3,035 parking spaces around the city and help motorists find vacant spots through the RTA mobile app or through the electronic sign boards placed at the parking lots. According to an official at RTA, the new system saves motorists 20-30% of their time (an average of 8 minutes) as they no longer need to drive around full parking lots aimlessly.

Maitha Mohammad Bin Adai, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said: “The system involves sophisticated technologies like ground sensors and digital cameras to monitor the usage of parking through detecting vacant slots and instantly transmitting information to the central system for display onto the information signs and the smart app. With the information being transmitted in real time, motorists have a clear idea of how many vacant spaces are available and where they are located.”
