The Battle of the Ultimate Racing Simulators

Posted by Ayoub Elkatib on Jun 14, 2018

Racing games have evolved so much through the years. There is no shortage of driving games in the market, but hardcore driving gamers only ever consider a handful of titles among the hundreds. The definite standouts among these are, without a doubt, Gran Turismo for the Sony PlayStation and Forza for the Xbox.

Soundtrack

Imagine you’re driving the car of your dreams. Then imagine how it must sound inside it. For a racing simulator to be great, then a gamer needs to almost get lost in the gameplay. Audio is an incredibly important part of the gameplay. Gran Turismo has improved a lot when it comes to soundtrack, but it’s still eating dust from Forza’s amazing renders.

Consistency

If you’re looking for consistency, Forza is a lot more consistent. A new game is released almost every year. In just 12 years Forza already has 9 titles, compared to 6 titles in GranTurismo’s 20 years, and you’re right to call out Forza for market saturation. Gamers are more likely to pre-order a much-awaited installment, than purchase a new game that they just expect to come every year.

Expansion Packs

Forza has some incredible expansion packs, obtaining licenses from the likes of Fast & Furious and Hot Wheels. On the other hand, GT comes pre-packed with a wide selection of cars.

Gameplay

Forza’s open world makes for a fun experience, and you can say goodbye to more than a few hours of your life. What takes the centerstage in GT is the competition. In Forza, you simply don’t get that urge to compete. In GranTurismo, PVP will become your life. The good part? Players all over the world get compete with each other. The best part? The winners get the chance to actually attend the Nissan GT Academy, in real life!

Realistic Drive

For a lot of players, it all boils down to this: which offers a more realistic experience? GranTurismo made the grand effort of recreating the cars and the racetracks in all their realness. The handling, build, strength and speed of the cars are – you guessed it – hyper-realistic. The racetracks in the more recent GT titles are actual racetracks that you can find in the real world. The only thing that’s missing in this almost too real recreation is the damage physics. In Forza, you can render your car unusable. However, Forza’s damage physics is far from perfect, and realism isn’t really its strong suit. In Forza, you can drive a rover on the Moon. Your wildest driving fantasies may just come true with Forza but, when it comes to realism, GranTurismo takes the spotlight.

GranTurismo was the undisputed king for many years, but Forza came and gave gamers something to keep them excited for hours on end. So, who’s king of the racing sims? You only really get to choose between Forza and GranTurismo, because there is literally no other racing simulator that comes close. GT will prove your love for cars, and Forza will prove your love of driving.
