The Beijing Motor Show: A Look

Posted by Mansoor A. Bukhari on May 4, 2016

The 14th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition was held at the China International Exhibition Center New Venue and Old Venue simultaneously from April 25th to May 4th 2016. This motor show is one of the largest automotive exhibitions in China. It is held biennially so the next one will be held in 2018. This concept was introduced in 1990 and the amount of exhibitors grows in every edition. This year also, there were many makes present at the show to show off their latest creations. The main focus was on Haval, Nissan, Infiniti, Honda, Citroen, BMW and Cadillac.

The Haval brand mainly focused on the launch of their new SUV called the H7. The H7 sits nicely between H6 Coupe and the H8. You can read more about it here.

Next up is Infiniti. The premium cousin of Nissan showcased its new concept car simply called the Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration. This is basically the brand’s way of showing off its new conceptual design for the mid-size SUVs in the future. So expect the new QX60 and QX70 to be based on this design language.

After that, it is time for Nissan. Nissan, too, showcased a futuristic concept called the IDS Concept. This is basically Nissan’s vision of autonomous driving. However, the star will definitely be the new Tiida. This Tiida is a facelifted version of the previous one but looks refreshing nonetheless. There is a new set of headlamps and taillamps to make it instantly recognizable. The front fascia is clearly taken from the Maxima. There are not many interior changes but it is still a fresh new car.

Honda also showcased its new flagship SUV at the motor show called the Avancier. This is a first ever coupe-like offroad capable SUV from the Japanese make to lure Chinese consumers. The SUV is powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine and is set against the likes of Ford Edge. The Avancier is not going to be available in the Middle East for now but it definitely looks something that can sell here. Other than that, there was the XR-V as well.

Citroen presented its electric car called the Electric Mehari. It is an all-electric vehicle powered by a 30 KWh battery and a top speed of 110 km/h.  The battery will last for 200km.

BMW did not showcase anything really new at the Motor Show. Instead, it showed off the already popular i3, M2 and M4 GTS.

Finally, it is time for the American brand – Cadillac. Caddy showed off its new CT6 PHEV for the eco-friendly enthusiasts in China. The CT6 PHEV features a hybrid powertrain which is a combination of 2.0 liter turbocharged engine with 2 electric motors.
