Top Safety Features Your New Car Should Have

Posted by on Jun 19, 2018

Safety should always be a primary consideration when buying a new car. After all, these features can help ensure the security of your life and those of your loved ones. Let us look at what these are:

Airbags

This is one of the basic safety features that every car should have. In case of a collision, the airbag will absorb the impact of the crash while minimizing the possibility of an injury to the driver or passenger. They are most effective when used with seatbelts.

Look for models that offer more airbags, such as those located at the driver’s knee that minimize the risk of injuries in these areas. Also look for airbags that provide side impact and head protection.

Adaptive cruise control

This technology ensures that you will always be at a safe distance and speed from the car in front of you. It uses ultrasonic sensors and radar to monitor the car in front of you, and slow down to a pre-set speed once it detects that the car in front is moving more slowly.

Autonomous braking

This feature uses sensors to detect if there are cars or other obstacles in front of you, and then automatically brakes if you do not respond in time. Autonomous braking is usually available for low-speed conditions, although others may send an alert before engaging the brakes if the driver takes no action.

Anti-lock braking system

This feature will allow you to maintain steering control of your vehicle in case you have to brake suddenly, by preventing the brakes from locking. However, you still need to drive defensively since an ABS will not guarantee that you will not lose control if you are using excessive steering maneuvers or driving too fast. A four-wheel ABS is standard with all passenger vehicles while others may have a two-wheel or four-wheel ABS.

Blind-spot monitoring

This simple safety feature alerts you if there is a car beside yours that you may not see. An alert appears in the side mirror that will warn you there is a car in your blind spot and it is not safe to change lanes.

Forward collision alerts

This feature warns you when you are too close to a vehicle in front of you. This particular safety feature is also found in autonomous braking systems.

Adaptive headlights

These headlights help increase your field of visibility by automatically pivoting in the direction you are travelling. They are particularly helpful for traveling around curves where you may not detect a car in front of you as you are turning.

Lane keeping assistance

This feature will ensure that your car stays within your lane by alerting you. Some models may also offer minor assistance such as providing minor correction to your steering when it detects you are moving outside the lane lines.

Traction control

This feature controls the amount of slip of your drive wheels when you apply extra power. It adjusts the output of your engine to improve the stability of your car. Some systems may even apply braking force to specific wheels while you are accelerating.

When shopping for a car, you should ensure that it has most, if not all these features. Remember that safety should always come first!
