Representing over 60% of the country’s automotive imports from around the world, automobiles are an eminent part of the UAE’s landscape, serving as a regional hub for new vehicles, used vehicles, and automotive spare parts in the MENA region. Nithul Lakshman, Managing Director at PAL Auto Garage, shares a few tips and tricks to bag the best used cars on the market.

Q. In your opinion, what is the biggest advantage of purchasing a used car over a new one?

The monetary advantage that a used car offers is hard to ignore. Avoiding the initial depreciation hit, used cars tend to cost less to acquire and insure than their new car counterparts. More importantly, some of us love a design or feature of an older vehicle which simply may not be available in newer models, something like a 1967 Ford Mustang!

Q. What should individuals be wary of when buying a used car?

I can’t stress enough how important it is to carry out a good amount of research on the company, dealer, or website beforehand. Sticking to reputed portals and dealerships reduces the risk involved with purchasing a used car and usually ensures peace of mind in the long run.

Q. What documents should a potential buyer ask to see?

Be it a dealer or a direct owner, potential buyers should always request for a RTA passing guarantee from the seller. PAL Auto Garage is approved by the RTA to offer inspection checks, and carry out safety and emission tests in the UAE.

Q. Should an individual take a used car to a garage to be inspected, what should they look out for?

To sum it up into three broad categories, individuals should pay careful attention to the condition of the mechanical components, the electricals, and the bodywork. A thorough inspection of the mechanicals should reveal if an engine is running smoothly and if there are any leakages from cracked hoses and the likes. An examination of the electrical components will also expose the performance of the A/C, lighting, and computer system. Finally, while minor scratches and dents are part and parcel of driving a vehicle, a thorough body and chassis inspection will help to better understand the accident history of the vehicle.
