Toyota looks into building flying cars

Toyota seems to be onto something. In 2015, it patented more concepts than any other automotive brand in the world and has just made public a patent for a rear-engine flying vehicle with a shapeshifting body. But contain your excitement, for these aren’t features you’ll find in the next-generation Camry. In fact, whether Toyota does anything with the patent at all, is a mystery only time will solve.

Filed in 2014 but published in 2016, Toyota’s latest patent points in the direction of a shape-morphing fuselage for an aero car. The idea is pretty simple in that the wings would be housed inside the body until it is ready for takeoff. When ready, the sides would open up and the wings would extend, allowing the flexible body to contract for better aerodynamics.

Based on the rear propeller in the rendering, it would be safe to assume that the aero car is powered by a rear-mounted engine or an electric motor that would drive the rear wheels. But while this patent seems to be the answer to the traffic woes of many, the unfortunate truth is that it is just a patent…
