79 cars were stolen by a traffic policeman, a court heard yesterday. The Emirati 25-year-old searched for old dusty cars that were abandoned then used his position to change the cars' ownership details on the police database in Jebel Ali Police Station.

A 22-year old with a Comoros Island Passport, a 25-year-old Saudi and a 39-year-old Omani, who helped him sell the cars, all denied charges.

He handed himself in to the police after sleepless nights and guilt taking over, said prosecutors.

"I felt guilty because I am supposed to be an officer of the law who serves and protects but instead I was stealing cars," he said, "I couldn't even sleep and nightmares haunted me and woke me up at many nights."

July 7th is scheduled to be the next hearing.
