For petrolheads all around the globe, the first few months of every new year are motor show galore. Detroit to Chicago and Geneva to Shanghai, it’s when manufacturers reveal their best to the world.

In a slightly strange move, Volvo’s XC40 will be skipping a reveal at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, only to be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April for the very first time – an act that is in line with the Swedish automaker’s owner, Geely.

Sharing its platform with the popular Lynk & Co 01, the Volvo XC40 is to be built in China with a choice of three engines: a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder that produces 180 horsepower, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that boosts power figures up to 240 horsepower, and a 1.5-liter plug-in hybrid that bumps power up to 254 horsepower.

While the XC40 concept is a little too close for comfort to its Brit rival, the Range Rover Evoque, here’s hoping the designers work their magic and create a crossover that is as striking and distinct in its appearance as the newer entrants into the Swedish automaker’s line-up.

Although the Shanghai Auto Show isn’t one to garner much attention globally, with the debut of the XC40 and the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman, the 2017 iteration may just break that spell.
