2016 BMW X6 Review - Luxury SUV with Power and Style
The BMW X6 has been part of the German automaker’s lineup since 2007 and is credited with inventing a niche in the automotive space. Combining SUV characteristics with those of a coupe, the X6 has led to the creation of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment, which has been highly successful for the brand.
Key Features
| Key Features: | |
| Engine | 4.4L Bi-Turbo / V8 |
| Transmission | 8-speed Automatic |
| Power | 450 Hp / 650 Nm |
| Top Speed | 250 km/h |
| Price | AED 405,000 |
Exterior
Targeted at those who value luxury and power, the BMW X6 is a mature offering appealing to small families. Its contours complement the vehicle's aggressiveness, following a seamless design philosophy.
The BMW X6 rides on 20-inch alloys wrapped in 275/40 Pirelli P Zero tires. While it has received criticism for its bulky rear, aesthetic opinions are subjective.
Up front, the BMW X6 2016 retains the adaptive headlights of its predecessor. Using various sensors, steering angle, and electric motors, the headlights illuminate even the darkest alleys with ease.
Interior
The interior of the BMW X6 is adorned with premium leather and wood finishing. The Dark Wood panels beautifully complement the Aragon leather seats. With an ambient mood lighting system offering three hues (blue, orange, white), the design is sporty yet luxurious.
Headroom and legroom are adequate for front seat occupants, but the sloping roofline affects rear seat space. Although the seating position is comfortable, visibility is hampered by an elevated dashboard and narrow rear window.
BMW has eliminated the in-built ashtray, but the Shift-By-Wire transmission, which returns to its original position, can fumble drivers at times.
Safety & Technology
The BMW X6 comes with a hefty price tag, bringing numerous technological features such as Satellite Navigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, Adaptive Headlights, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium sound system as standard.
The sound system provides an exceptional aural experience. However, the X6 is not without flaws. Features like a touch controller for SMS messages, the absence of a seek button on the multimedia system, and the awkward AUX jack positioning raise questions.
Although the BMW X6 has not undergone crash tests by Euro NCAP or IIHS, it includes several airbags, electronic stability control, a tire-pressure monitoring system, and child-safe windows. Notably, there are no handles in the cabin for passengers to hold onto.
Drive
The BMW X6 is powered by a 4.4-liter Bi-Turbo V8, delivering 450 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque, making it thrilling to drive. The power delivery is nearly instantaneous.
The responsive steering paired with a Tiptronic transmission allows for an engaging drive at any speed. While the large brakes provide excellent stopping power, the suspension stiffness and gear-holding in Manual mode need improvement.
Verdict
Since its introduction in 2009, the BMW X6 has consistently proven the existence of its niche. It is designed for speed enthusiasts and family-oriented individuals seeking practicality, style, and performance in one luxurious package.
