DEWA's Efforts in Developing Electric Vehicle Infrastructure in Dubai

Introduction

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has long been at the forefront of promoting electric vehicles and their supporting infrastructure in the region. With the aim of reducing air pollution and protecting the environment from the impacts of the transportation sector in the emirate, DEWA launched a three-phase plan in February 2015. This initiative involves close collaboration with car manufacturers, airports, the Dubai Municipality, shopping malls, fuel stations, and various other stakeholders.

Charging Plan Details

Phase One

The first phase of the plan included the installation of 100 charging stations across the emirate. Within just one year, DEWA made significant progress by introducing numerous electric charging points at fuel stations throughout Dubai.

Available Charging Stations

According to DEWA's website, there are three types of charging stations available:

Wall Box: Takes 2 – 4 hours to charge.
Medium Public: Also takes 2 – 4 hours.
Fast Charge: Can recharge a vehicle battery in 20 - 40 minutes.

How to Use the Charging Station

The first step to using an electric vehicle charging station is to register your vehicle for a Green Charging Card. This process can be completed at DEWA's customer service center and requires a refundable deposit of 500 AED. Once this process is finalized, individuals can locate electric charging points throughout the city and recharge their vehicle batteries.

Charging Costs

While there is no fixed cost for charging an electric vehicle, it depends on the energy required to charge the battery. The rate for public charging stations is 29 fils per kilowatt-hour. If an electric vehicle is charged at home, the residential electricity tariff will apply.
