Dubai’s roads are known for their high standards and stringent traffic rules. One of the ways the Emirate ensures road safety is through the black points system - basically a legal measure to discourage reckless driving and traffic violations. This system applies to all drivers, both residents and visitors, and can lead to serious consequences if not managed carefully.

What Are Black Points?

The black points system is a form of penalty wherein drivers accumulate points for breaking traffic laws. Each violation adds a certain number of black points to the driver's record, depending on the severity of the offense.

The more serious the violation, the more black points are assigned. These points remain on the driver’s license for a set period, usually one year from the date of the offense, after which they are cleared, provided no other violations occur.

Motorsport fans can link them to penalty points that racing drivers get on their super licenses, accumulation of which leads to a race suspension.

Various traffic offenses are linked to different black point penalties. Some common violations and their corresponding points include:

  • Exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h: 12 black points
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol: 24 black points (and possible vehicle impoundment)
  • Driving recklessly or dangerously: 12 black points
  • Running a red light: 12 black points
  • Using a mobile phone while driving: 4 black points
  • Not wearing a seatbelt: 4 black points
  • Overloading a truck: 12 black points
  • Riding a motorbike without a helmet: 4 black points

The maximum number of black points a driver can accumulate is 24. Once this limit is reached, the driver's license is suspended (again, just like F1), and depending on the offense, the suspension can range from three months to one year.

If a driver reaches 24 black points, they face severe penalties. These can include:

  • License suspension: A driver’s license can be suspended for three months upon reaching 24 points for the first time. Repeat offenses can lead to longer suspensions which can range from six months to even a year.
  • Fines and imprisonment: Serious offenses, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, not only carry black points but can also result in jail time, hefty fines, and the potential confiscation of the vehicle.

  • Hefty insurance premiums: In addition to these legal consequences, black points can affect insurance premiums, as insurers often see drivers with black points as high-risk clients.

Is there a way to reduce black points?

Unlike motorsport, the Dubai black points can be cleared. Dubai offers several ways for drivers to reduce or clear their black points:

  • Traffic Safety Courses: Drivers with fewer than 24 black points can attend traffic safety courses to reduce their points. Successfully completion of these courses lead to a reduction of up to eight black points.
  • Time Lapse: Black points automatically expire after 12 months, provided no further violations are committed within that period.
  • Amnesties: Occasionally, certain amnesties or opportunities are offered to drivers to have black points removed as part of broader road safety campaigns or during national holidays.

How can one completely avoid black points?

Simple: follow the basic traffic rules. Please keep the below tips in mind to ensure your and others safety on the public roads:

  • Speeding is the most common cause of black points. Remember: speed thrills but kills.
  • Using a mobile phone or other distractions can easily result in points. It's best to use hands-free devices if necessary or avoid phone use entirely while driving.
  • Ensure that both you and your passengers are properly buckled up at all times.
  • Even when in a rush, you should always stop at red lights.
