Enhancements to the Audi RS Q e-tron Ahead of Dakar Rally 2024
Audi has further developed the RS Q e-tron in preparation for its third participation in the Dakar Rally. The updated rally prototype features a leading-edge electric drivetrain paired with a high-voltage battery and innovative enhancements across multiple areas. In January 2024, Audi's driver teams, including Matthias Ekström/Emil Bergkvist, Stéphane Peterhansel/Edouard Boulanger, and Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz, will benefit from precise improvements that enhance safety, increase the vehicle's durability against rally challenges, and reduce its weight and maintenance time.
Regarding Audi's participation in Dakar Rally 2024, Rolf Michel, Head of Audi Motorsport, stated, "The Audi teams have clearly demonstrated the capabilities of the RS Q e-tron by winning six stages and securing first place 22 times since 2022. We must continue to deliver strong performance to compete for the top positions." Audi Sport has analyzed previous participations and identified weaknesses, with Dr. Leonardo Pascali, the Technical Director, focusing on five key areas since early summer.
Enhancing Safety Features:
The accidents involving Stéphane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz during the 2023 Dakar Rally led to Audi's improvements in safety. Enhancements have been made to the suspension system and shock absorbers, along with better weight distribution on the chassis to enhance vehicle control. Additionally, improvements to seat materials provide better support and reduce pressure on the driver and co-driver, contributing to overall performance enhancement.
Confidence in Vehicle Performance:
The RS Q e-tron is a robust racing vehicle that has proven its capabilities in the Dakar Rally. Enhancements to the wheel mounting elements have reduced the issue of wheel-to-rear attachment, which decreases the likelihood of damage. Furthermore, stronger wheels and more rigid sidewalls have been implemented to minimize the risk of breakage.
Comfort Improvements:
To facilitate the drivers' experience, engineers have improved sound insulation and sealed the cabin more effectively. The front hood now better protects the windshield from mud and water.
Comprehensive Enhancements:
From the chassis to the drive program, the development team has increased the RS Q e-tron’s power. Shock absorbers and springs have been optimized, and the weight of various components has been reduced to achieve a minimum weight. The power of the electric motors has also been reviewed and adjusted in accordance with new regulations.
Reducing Maintenance Time:
Daily maintenance tasks have been carefully studied to simplify procedures and reduce maintenance time. Modifications to connections, tool mounts, and fluid covers make the maintenance process more efficient.
Rolf Michel concluded, "Our engineering team has worked on further enhancing the RS Q e-tron through various creative solutions. We are ready for Dakar Rally 2024 and look forward to the race."
